Frequently asked questions
Is this normal behavior for a city dog?
Yes. NYC is a high-stimulation environment, and many so-called “problem behaviors” are stress responses. With the right plan, most dogs improve meaningfully.
Do you work with reactive or aggressive dogs?
Yes — reactivity and aggression are core areas for us. We assess safely, keep your dog under threshold, and use force-free behavior modification to change the emotional response that drives the behavior. See our reactive dog training and Reactive Resilience Therapy™ programs.
Do you use punishment, prong collars, or shock collars?
No — never. PJH Dog Training is strictly force-free and reward-based: no prong collars, choke chains, shock or e-collars, or intimidation. Aversive tools suppress behavior without resolving the underlying emotion, and can make fear and aggression worse.
How long does behavior training take?
It depends on the behavior, its history, and how consistently the plan is practiced between sessions. Many owners see meaningful change within a few sessions, while deeper issues like reactivity or separation anxiety take longer. We’ll give you a realistic timeline after the initial assessment.
Do you offer in-home sessions?
Yes — private in-home training is our primary format, so we can work in the exact environment where the behavior happens. We serve Manhattan, plus Brooklyn and Queens by appointment.
Can you help adult dogs or older dogs?
Absolutely. Dogs learn at every age. Adult and senior dogs do very well with force-free training — plans are simply adapted to their physical comfort, energy, and history.
My dog has multiple issues. Where do we start?
That’s common, and it’s exactly what the consultation sorts out. We identify what’s driving the behaviors, prioritize for safety and quick wins, and build one clear plan rather than chasing each symptom separately.
Do you offer group classes too?
What areas do you serve?
Manhattan is our home base at standard rates, with dedicated in-home visits to Brooklyn and Queens (an extended area service fee applies). See our Areas We Serve page for neighborhoods.
How do I get started?
Book a consultation. We’ll assess your dog in context, pinpoint what’s really going on, and recommend the most effective, humane path forward. You can book online any time.
